The Association for Asian Performance Focus Group of the Association of Theatre in Higher Education invites panel proposals and/or individual paper proposals for the ATHE 2012 conference theme:

Association for Asian Performance (AAP) Focus Group for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Annual Conference.

August 1-4 (Th-Sun), 2013.

“Join us in 2013 as ATHE travels to sunny Orlando, Florida, home of magic kingdoms, future worlds and fantastic adventures. We invite you to be playful, to examine the role of play in our teaching, research, and creations of theatre and performance. […]When do strategies of play become vital to ourselves, our students, our universities, or our local communities? When does play become work, or work become play? What is the cost of play? When must we play mouse, and when must we pay the Mouse?”

Asian performance highlights the costs, pleasures, and potentials of play in locations of tourism, contested spaces, performances for social change, constructions of self and community, and the intersections among regional, national, and international boundaries. (Panels might address theatrical movements, specialties, historical moments, key individuals, etc.) The AAP welcomes all panels and papers that address broad intersections of the theme and all genres of Asian performance.Investigations of specific modern, contemporary and/or traditional performances and genres, as well as intercultural, cross-cultural and diasporic topics are welcome. We also welcome all types of historical, theoretical, performative and dramatic/literary analysis.

Topics of interest might include, but are not limited to:

  • Gender – Past, Present, and Future
  • The Asian Diaspora and its theatre / Theatre and the Asian Diaspora
  • Religion
  • (Re-)theorization of a particular genre
  • “Intercultural” collaborations or explorations
  • Topics on a particular genre or trends
  • Topics of historical interest
  • Workshops – especially those that include a pedagogical focus

Panel proposals should be submitted online using the forms posted on the ATHE website(<http://www.athe.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=184>). Completed panel proposals are due by November 1, 2012. Only complete panel proposals will be considered by ATHE.

All technology requests must be included in your completed online panel proposal.

Payment is not due Nov. 1. Grant funding should cover costs, but you must apply by Nov. 1.

It is important to forward a copy of your completed proposal to Khai Thu Nguyen (khai@berkeley.edu) for planning purposes, especially for AV requests.  There is no guarantee that AAP can provide funding for AV requests. The AAP must know of all AV requests in order to help you secure funding. (See below).

For individual papers, please e-mail ideas you have to the Association for Asian Performance VP for ATHE Conference Planning, Khai Thu Nguyen (khai@berkeley.edu), by Oct. 18, 2012 so that she can attempt to match you with other interested parties.

Multi-disciplinary panels are encouraged.

IMPORTANT: LCD package for computers, including projectors, sound and DVD/VCR are NOT free — see below for further details. Grants for A/V support are available and encouraged.

Sources of funds for AV equipment are ATHE and AAP grants. You must submit your request for ATHE grants and guest passes at the same time as submitting the 2013 online Session Proposal.

Individual panels are responsible for applying for AV equipment and searching for funds.

Computers are NOT ordered or supplied for sessions. Apple users must supply their own adapter cords.
